Kroger - Employee Opinion Survey

THE CHALLENGE
Headquartered in Cincinnati, The Kroger Co. is one of the nation's largest grocery retailers, with fiscal 2004 sales of $56.4 billion. Kroger wished to provide employees the opportunity to rate the organization, the work environment and the leadership team.

But how can you accurately survey a division with more than 30,000 employees?

THE SOLUTION
Kroger called on TalentSmart® to implement a quick, nonintrusive upward feedback process for employees. The survey objectives were:

1. Tap into the observations and good ideas of Kroger employees.

2. Gather baseline employee perceptions about leadership, job satisfaction and the whether the company is living its values.

3. Provide a summary of strengths and concerns for key groups to facilitate targeted improvements.

THE PROCESS
After review of the organization's vision, mission, values and business priorities, TalentSmart® worked closely with their VP's of Human Resources to develop a survey that would bring employee opinion to life. This included an online survey on a customized platform, as well as a paper-based version for employees without access to a computer.

After review and support from the executive team, the survey went live for two weeks using a simple web link e-mailed to all staff. Results were compiled within 2 weeks of survey completion, meaning the entire process took less than a month.

THE RESULTS
Results were delivered in a comprehensive report and presentation to the division Presidents and their executive teams. The report included twenty "filters" of the data to provide different perspectives based on employee demographics, as well as a summary of employee responses to open-ended questions.

The survey achieved a tremendous response, with a 99% confidence interval in the data. The results were disseminated via cascading communication throughout the division, and the rapid return of results enabled responsive action planning from the executive team. Employees not only received specific results; they saw the company take targeted action based upon their feedback.
